Shout it from the rooftops, bellow from behind your bars, cry from the coffee shops, entries are opening this week for the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century (OMWDC), the 202km team time-trial road race that takes cyclists on a frantic, fast (for some) and fun (for most) tour of the Cape’s Overberg region.
Tier One entries open on 17 August 2022 at 1pm, while Tier Two entries open on Friday 19 August at 1pm. The 2022 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century, the 30th anniversary of the event, will take place on 26 November, starting and finishing in Swellendam.
Tier One entrants include PPA members, 2021 OMWDC entrants who could not participate due to the cancelled event, and corporate teams. Tier Two is general entrants wishing to ride this bucket-list route.
With no restrictions in place, the OMWDC is back to its full complement of teams, with each team now able to consist of 12 riders once again. In short, the new normal is back to the old normal, with the OMWDC ready to welcome a full field of riders for the first time in two years.
Riders will tackle the same great OMWDC route that they’ve become familiar with over the years, including the highlights of Tradouw Pass, Op de Tradouw, Montagu, the pleasingly purple blasts of the jacaranda trees along the R317 that our photographers can’t seem to ignore, and the sneaky sweat up the final three climbs as the finish draws near.
“We are really looking forward to our 2022 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century,” says David Bellairs of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of the OMWDC. “We have had our share of challenges in the past few years, but with the events industry firing on all cylinders and riders eager to test themselves, we are confident of putting on a great show at this year’s Double Century. To be able to host a full field of participants in Swellendam once again is a thrilling prospect.”
Farhad Sader, managing director of Old Mutual Wealth, adds, “Old Mutual Wealth is proud to be the anchor sponsor for the Double Century, South Africa’s premier 202km team road cycling event, for the second year. There is a distinct value alignment between competitive cycling and investing. Both require specific goals supported by multi-skilled teams dedicated to working together with the cyclist or investor to achieve defined outcomes. And to do well, one needs to commit and stay invested, persevering through the highs and lows of competition and investment markets.
I, like many others, was gutted at the cancellation of the race in 2021 due to inclement weather conditions. Despite the cancellation, we did honour our commitment to uplift the local communities by providing employment in the run-up to the event and handing over food to a community feeding programme immediately following the cancellation. Social media engagement shows that there is a deep level of commitment to the #OMWDC. This attitude of staying the course is also a key principle for success in investing. I look forward to seeing you at the start and finish lines on 26 November for the 2022 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century!”
