Spring is around the corner, after a long, wet winter. And that can mean only one thing: Entries open for the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century. This 202km team time-trial road race takes riders on a scenic tour of the Cape’s Overberg region in November and is an absolute must on all cycling bucket lists.
The 2023 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century, the 31st in the race’s long history, takes place on Saturday, 25 November, starting and finishing in Swellendam. Riders will tackle the same route that they’ve become familiar with in recent years; Tradouw Pass, Op de Tradouw, Montagu, Cogmanskloof, the colourful cannas and jacaranda trees the photographers can’t seem to ignore, and the unrelenting three final climbs as the finish draws near. Each imprints on the memory of every finisher of this storied event.
Tier One entries (paid-up Pedal Power Association members) opened on Monday, 14 August 2023, while Tier Two entries (General and Corporates) opened on Wednesday, 16 August. There are limited spots available; team captains can still enter and pay, but must only create one entry per team – multiple entries don’t increase the chances of success, and can incur extra costs for refunding duplicate payments.
With the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century back to its full entry complement, each team can consist of 12 riders once again, the ideal number and the only way to earn the coveted Charles Milner medal for finishing all 12 together.
“We are really looking forward to the 2023 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century,” says David Bellairs of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of the OMWDC. “This event embodies everything that is cycling – camaraderie, friendship, health and the joy of accomplishing something truly special. It is my favourite cycling weekend of the year, and an honour for us to host so many like-minded cycling enthusiasts in beautiful Swellendam.”
Farhad Sader, managing director of Old Mutual Wealth, adds, “The Double Century is fast becoming one of the highlights of the year for Old Mutual Wealth. It’s a competitive environment, which highlights the value of team work in achieving our goals through planning, resilience, digging deep and sheer grit. The principle of staying the course and focusing on the long term goals, not getting distracted by the short term trends, is what enables us to make it to the finishing line. It is this ethos that we use for our clients. To us this is what the Double Century is about, navigating the ups and downs of the course without panic, knowing you planned and prepared well. I look forward to seeing you at the start and finish lines on 25 November for the 2023 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century.”
